Richard Dillane was born near London. He graduated in philosophy from Manchester University and spent ten years in Australia where he has citizenship through his father and where, besides acting, his occupations included directing for theatre and opera, fruit-picking, demolition and wilderness adventure guide. He returned to the UK in 1994 and has appeared across all media. He and actress Jayne McKenna have three children, all boys, and live in Brighton.
